Refrigerator Defrost Heating Elements
The heating element is a key component in no-frost refrigerators and freezers. Its role is to melt frost inside the appliance; older models did not include this component and required manual defrosting.
A no-frost refrigerator can still produce frost. The difference is that its defrost element removes the frost automatically, eliminating the need for manual cleaning.
In modern refrigerators, frost forms around the evaporator. If it remains, it can freeze on the pipes, obstruct refrigerant performance and prevent the appliance from cooling effectively. Frost may form as the door is opened and closed and the thermal balance changes. The compressor removes heat and produces cooling, while moisture freezes around the evaporator. The defrost element, controlled by the refrigerator’s thermodisc and electronic board, periodically converts this frost to vapour so the system can operate correctly.
